Toby received his JD Summa Cum Laude from the District of Columbia School of Law, where he was on the Law Review and graduated second in his class. He did his undergraduate work at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas and at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he received his BS in Civil Engineering in 1971
Jacqueline D. Byrd (Jackie) worked on Capitol Hill more than twenty-five years, ending her career there as Assistant to the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives. She graduated from the Senior Managers in Government program at Harvard in the summer of 1994. In 1995, she entered the University of Baltimore School of Law, and now practices law with her husband, Toby, in the firm of BYRD & BYRD, LLC in Bowie. Her undergraduate work was done at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where she received a BA in Speech and Drama, and earned membership in the honorary forensic fraternity, Phi Kappa Delta.
Jackie is currently the Recording Secretary of the Maryland/D.C. chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and in 2003 won the NAELA Award for Outstanding Chapter Member. She is a founding Co-Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Prince George’s County Bar Association and a member of the Governing Council of the Elder Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association. Jackie focuses her practice in the areas of Elder Law - including estate planning, wills and trusts, powers of attorney, special needs trusts, Medicaid eligibility, and asset preservation.
As a UB alumna, Jackie received a Dean’s Citation as Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Administration newsletter, "The Official Reporter." While in law school, she was a Teaching Assistant for two years in the Legal Analysis, Research and Writing program, and during her first year she received an AmJur award for making the highest grade in that program. In June of 2004, she received the "President’s Award" from the Prince George’s County Bar Association for outstanding contributions to the Bar and to the community. In December, 2004, Jackie was named in Washingtonian magazine’s list of 780 "Top Washington Attorneys."
For many years, Jackie has been the "senior issues" columnist for The Bowie Blade-News and the Crofton Crier newspapers. Her column "Senior Moments" is widely read in the Bowie/Crofton community.
Jackie is a proud grandmother who delights in spending every possible moment with triplets Toby, Jack and Anna, and little brother Timothy. Jackie also loves reading, playing piano, movies and traveling.
Timothy P. Leahy practices law in Maryland and the District of Columbia and is a member of the American, Maryland, D.C, and Prince George’s County Bar associations. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Baltimore Law School in May 2000, earned his M.B.A. in 1993 at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, and his B.S. in Transportation & Logistics at Maryland in 1990.
Timothy brings over 10 years experience in business to his practice of the law and focuses on litigation and general practice matters. A former home improvement contractor and army reservist, he volunteers with Christmas in April and as a coach for the Bowie Boys & Girls Club. He is also a volunteer Mediator for the District Court of Maryland. Timothy moved to Bowie in 1982 and lives there with Kristen, his wife of 14 years, and two sons, Connor and James.
Jessica L. Estes joined Byrd & Byrd as an associate in 2004 after working for the firm as a law clerk. Jessica received her J.D. from the University Of Baltimore School Of Law in May, 2003 after earning a B.A. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland. Jessica is a member of the American, Maryland, and Prince George’s County Bar Associations and is an invaluable asset in the firm’s complex family law, personal injury and business ligation matters.
Jessica grew up in Bowie and graduated from Bowie High School. Her understanding and fondness for Bowie’s unique appeal and history adds to the firm’s reputation as a home town provider of outstanding legal services. An avid runner, Jessica participates in races throughout the year to benefit various charitable organizations.
Joshua Winger practices law in Maryland and the District of Columbia and is a member of the American, Maryland, D.C, and Prince George’s County Bar associations. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Baltimore Law School in May 2007, and his B.A. in Political Science in 2004 at UMBC in 2000.
Joshua has been with the firm for over seven years, first as a law clerk and now as an attorney. Joshua has also worked for trial judges and one appellate judge. At Byrd & Byrd, Joshua primarily handles estate planning and litigation matters. Joshua has a strong desire to help others and has volunteered for multiple local outreaches, such as at the Stanton Center in Annapolis. He recently married his lovely bride, Lindsay. Joshua is also a passionate fan of soccer and the arts.
